Project Perth: Restructuring Overcomes Challenges and Transforms Business

In this engagement, our client, the Company we will call Perth, was a wholesaler of pumps, providing tailored solutions for a diverse client base from homeowners through to construction and agriculture.  About 12 months before reaching out for our assistance, the Company hit a cash flow crunch as a result of the owner stepping away from management too far and poor operational being made.  Examples are an ill-timed move away to another suburb, away from its core local customer base, coupled with lingering impacts from COVID-19 trading restrictions.

Clearly, the difficulties the Company encountered were not driven by a single issue but rather a combination of factors.  These included persistent supply chain disruptions, staffing shortages, and broader operational inefficiencies.  Often, distress arises when multiple challenges converge, and in this case, the Company had to navigate a complex web of legal, tax, accounting, and financial concerns.

What Would Be Different This Time?

In response to these challenges, GM Advisory assisted the Company in refocusing on important issues, such as getting their accounts and tax reporting back on track while they implemented a better invoicing process.  This focus has yielded positive results, with the Company’s financial affairs now normalised.  Additionally, the company has worked on boosting its gross profit margin by 5%, reducing costs, improving cash flow, and enhancing sales processes.

By prioritising timely invoicing, compliance, and financial efficiency, the company has turned its operations around, positioning itself for future success despite the challenges it faced.

If capital and cashflow could be freed up, the Company could invest in a simpler manufacturing process, allowing for higher output from a less specialised workforce.

The Restructuring Plan

At one point, the company faced the prospect of liquidation due to its financial difficulties and in fact the ATO had issued a demand against the Company.

Despite this, the Company was able to persuade its creditors to make a Restructuring Plan based on a solid proposal of less than 50 cents in the dollar payable over the course of 12 months.  However, within three months, the company’s director personally secured a loan and paid the compromised debt in full.  As a result, the company was able to return to normal trading status and continue its operations without further disruption.

The director praised the outcome and considered the result a great success.  The company’s recovery was a testament to the resilience and strategic decision-making of its leadership and the support received from creditors during a challenging period.

Conclusion

This case highlights the importance of strategic financial management and proactive decision-making in the face of adversity.  Despite significant setbacks, including disruptions to operations, increased costs, and regulatory compliance challenges, the company’s commitment to improving invoicing processes and addressing financial obligations allowed it to navigate these issues successfully.
